‘THE MOTHS ON THE CHANGING BARK.’
Nittan was rocking from one leaf stalk to another in deep thought, but after his parents had found him to be inconsolable, they left him with his thoughts. The following morning, Nittan went out to exercise his wings. Still ignoring his mother’s command to forget about Niya, he flew over beds of yellow and white sunflowers. Just as he was about to settle onto a flower stalk, his eyes wandered about and caught sight of a beautiful moth called Emerald, an Onyx Moth princess. Surprised to see a female Onyx Moth outside the lichen-covered bark, he watched her tread across the leaf-covered rain pool, all the while flapping her darkened wings like a ballerina. Emerald was, of course, aware that a Pickled Bird could attack her, so she was careful not to be seen and hid among the darkened-colored leaves on the clustered rain pool. She was with another female moth, her older sister Missel, who was on the lookout for Pickled Birds. When Nittan saw them stepping delicately across the rain pool, he flew home quickly to tell his mother what he had seen. “Oh, Mother, you wouldn’t believe what my eyes beheld!” Nittan exclaimed, soaring around the room in high, looping circles. His mother told him to be still, but Nittan merely landed on a stem and began to dance. “What is it, my dear son?” His mother asked him, surprised by the sudden sound of joy in her child’s voice. “Oh, Mother, my eyes beheld a beautiful moth. She is the prettiest Peppered Moth my eyes have seen since Niya,” Nittan spoke breathlessly. “Tell me, Nittan; is she more beautiful than your mother?” His mother teased, winking her eyelids. He laughed and danced with his wings flapping up and down for the first time since the event that had led to Niya’s demise.
