#Diversity #Tolerance: Questionable at Chase Bank.

I hope Chase Bank practice diversity and tolerance as it purports to do. So, I was driving through a Chase bank window today, and there standing behind the drive through window; a woman in Hijab dressing, attending to customers as they drive through. I have never seen that before and was kind of bemused, but thought it nice. But then again, I wondered in my head if Chase Bank does indeed promote diversity and tolerance of people across all cultural spectrum as it is seen with this Muslim woman wearing her Ha jib openly displayed. ‘Me and my curiosity mind; so, I decided to walk inside the bank and make my transactions. And just as I thought; no single employee that I saw attending to customers or seating in the open cubicles where most of the employees were seating or the South Asian man who approached me was of African descent. I am not implying that Chase bank does not hire Black people. No, that is not what I am trying to say here, but the fact is, there was no single African looking person working in that branch, visibly displayed; and I have been going to this particular branch for more than 10 years. I live very close by to this particular branch.

Please don’t get me wrong about my reference to a woman with Hijab, there is nothing wrong with a woman wearing a Hijab, if that’s her religious beliefs and she feel she has to demonstrate it by wearing it on her head. The problem I see with such hypocrisy is the readily available tolerance of Muslims wearing a Ha jib in a Banking Institution, but same Institution would not practice the same level of tolerance with its African American citizens of dark skin complexion. I know what I am talking about because I use to work for Chase Bank. Chase Bank is not diverse at all in terms of its hiring practices.
When you are discriminated against because of what you are wearing, if you cannot tolerate it, you can take it off. One can easily take off a Hijab, at a point of ridicule and threat to one’s life and blatant discriminatory practices that is seen all across the United States, but not so readily can you remove the color of your skin even if you wanted to.

So, for me, looking at that Muslim woman wearing a Ha-jib at a Chase Bank drive through window, I see hypocrisy at its worst, even though it may seem like Chase is making a strive in tolerating people of diverse religious background. Hypocrisy in that it is easy to tolerate a Muslim woman wearing her Ha-jib defiantly, open, but not easy tolerating employees of African origin being human and needing to survive. …What I think should be easy, is accommodating all employees of all cultures…tolerance and respectful treatment of all people should not be just to seem politically correct, because President-elect, Donald Trump has bashed Muslims, but tolerance should be consistent and displayed at all times especially if that is what the Bank purports to practice and promote in regards to diversity.

For me, the true tenant of diversity is of inclusion of all citizens. An organization’s success and competitiveness depends upon its ability to embrace diversity and realize the benefits. When organizations actively assess their handling of workplace diversity issues, develop and implement diversity plans, multiple benefits are reported such as: Increased adaptability.
Organizations such as Chase employing a diverse workforce can readily supply a greater variety of solutions to problems in service, sourcing, and allocation of resources. Employees from diverse backgrounds bring individual talents and experiences in suggesting ideas that are flexible in adapting to fluctuating markets and customer demands. A diverse collection of skills and experiences broadens service range, (e.g. languages, cultural understanding) and it also allows a company to provide service to customers on a global basis.
A diverse workforce that feels comfortable communicating varying points of view provides a larger pool of ideas and experiences. When I walked into that branch in Schaumburg,IL, I did not feel like I was part of Chase community even though I should, since I have been banking with Chase Bank for nearly twenty-five years. So, I should be able to walk into a branch and see a diverse employees working at its counter at various times— not just at interval when the bank wants to promote its diversity program so to lure in businesses, but in indeed truly meant to draw from its pool of diverse employees to meet its business strategic needs and the needs of its customers more effectively.
